Anyone can mint arbitrary Snowman NFTs

Root + Impact

Description

  • Normal behavior: Snowman NFTs should be minted only as the result of a valid SnowmanAirdrop claim, after the receiver proves eligibility with a Merkle proof, signs the claim, and transfers the corresponding Snow tokens into the airdrop contract.

  • The issue is that Snowman.mintSnowman() is external and has no access control. Any address can call it directly with any receiver and amount, bypassing Snow ownership, Merkle proof verification, signature verification, and the airdrop staking flow.

Risk

Likelihood:

  • Any externally owned account can call mintSnowman() directly after the NFT contract is deployed.

  • No Snow balance, approval, Merkle proof, or EIP-712 signature is required for the direct call.

Impact:

  • The Snowman NFT supply and allocation rules can be bypassed completely.

  • Attackers can mint arbitrary NFTs to themselves or others, diluting legitimate airdrop recipients and destroying scarcity assumptions.

Proof of Concept

The test deploys the airdrop system, ignores the airdrop contract entirely, and calls mintSnowman() directly from an attacker address. The attacker receives three NFTs despite never owning Snow, never submitting a Merkle proof, and never providing a valid claim signature.
